Canadians are saying farewell to the penny as the Canadian coin is being de-circulated. If you’re Canadian, and not sure what to do with the soon to be useless coin, try Starbucks. As a thank you to its customers and to mark the event, Starbucks is offering a deal today and tomorrow: Bring in your pennies, purchase one pound of Veranda blend coffee at regular price, get a second pound for one penny (while supplies last).
Kevin Reid, director Beverage, Starbucks Canada says “The de-circulation of the penny is the end of an era – and we wanted to mark the milestone by giving back to coffee lovers. As we celebrate the success of our Starbucks Blonde Roast coffee, and invite Canadians to re-name our Veranda BlendTM/MC, it seemed natural to offer coffee lovers this extra value for their pennies.”
The penny distribution will stop in Canada on February 4th. Starbucks plans to distribute pennies on cash owed while they are still available. If pennies are nowhere to be found, Starbucks will round the owed amount up or down to the nearest five cents.
Since Veranda’s launch in Canada a year ago, they’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response from customers who enjoy the milder roast. Because of this Canadian love of Veranda, Starbucks is inviting residents of the country to help rename it. They can visit www.starbucks.ca.blonde to submit an entry with their unique name. The winner will see their name incorporated into the new packaging set to roll out soon.
More information about the de-circulation of the penny is available from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca.
