Our Picks: Best Coffee Houses in Sacramento

For a long time, San Francisco (California’s coffee mecca) was the closest place in Northern California to find good specialty coffee (besides Starbucks, of course). In recent years, however, the coffee scene in Sacramento has exploded. Specialty coffee roasters are working hand in hand with local coffee shops, many coffee shops feature their own roasts, and the enthusiasm of Sac locals is unparalleled when it comes to getting a good cup of coffee. There’s so many locally beloved coffee houses to choose from in California’s capital, but we definitely have some favorites from what we’ve sampled so far!

Chocolate Fish Coffee

Address: Corner of 3rd and Q Street

Chocolate Fish is a very involved small batch coffee roaster, and you can taste that in their coffee. Their coffee selections are constantly changing as harvesting seasons change, which not only ensures you get the freshest brew, but that you also have an endless variety to choose from. The baristas are always smiling, engaging, and knowledgeable. The coffee house classifies itself as an “authentic New Zealand style coffee house”, and features such drinks as the Long Black (kind of like an Americano) and the Flat White (latte).

Favorite Drink: Flat White

Old Soul

Address: 1716 L Street

This is the flagship store for Old Soul. All the baking and roasting takes place at this location, and then you have the cafe. Again with the knowledgeable and friendly baristas – which just makes our day every time – and the decor invites you to cozy up and slowly sip your day away with it’s natural colors complimented by wood, brick, and leather. The coffee is hardy and speaks of long-time practice towards perfection. Not to mention, this is a great place to get a good French pressed coffee, and the sandwiches are to-die-for.

Favorite Drink: Any of their mochas.
