Japanese company, Kao Japan, has announced that they are preparing to release a new addition to their Healthya brand health drinks – Healthya Coffee. Their current line includes a collection of teas and waters.
They state that this new coffee drink will not use “fat blockers” like Pepsi Special or add fiber supplements like Mets Zero. Instead, they will be using existing components already found within coffee to produce healthy weight loss effects.
Here’s the process: First, Healthya coffee beans are roasted 2 and 1/2 times longer than the usual bean roast. They state that this increases the amount of chlorogenic acid by two times, which they say promotes weight loss. Since the beans are being roasted extra long, Kao is then using what they call a “nanotrap”. This reduces oxides that are produced during the roasting to one-fiftieth the amount found in regular coffee. Apparently this also creates a unique aftertaste.
Kao performed a 12 week trial after development of the drink, on which they monitored results on 109 obese men and women. An average of 3.3 lbs were lost during this time. 25% of participants reported weight loss during the first four weeks, 51% after the first eight weeks, and 72% after 12 weeks.
A press conference was then held in March by Kao’s president Michitaka Sawada and spokesperson Patrick Harlan. The president stated in the press conference: “Currently about 50 percent of men suffer from metabolic syndrome. Action must be taken at an early stage for this. Coffee and tea are the world’s two most consumed beverages and drinks that business people come into contact with on a daily basis. We encourage you to take the chance to reevaluate your lifestyle and substitute your regular coffee with Healthya Coffee.”
April 4th is the release date for the coffee in Japan and is expected to sell for $1.60 per can. Two types will be available for purchase: sugar free black and sugar light with milk.
