The other day I was on the phone with a friend. Let’s call her Samantha for anonymity-sake, i.e., she’d kill me if I outed her. I’ve been on many, many coffee dates with Samantha, and we generally concur that coffee is life. But she said something during our recent chat that I really couldn’t believe and just had to share – apparently, she was on her way at that very moment to the store to return the Keurig® she just bought.
I have to say, she caught me by surprise with this one. I mean, who on Earth would want to return a Keurig®? I’m thinking Samantha must have a good reason – perhaps it’s broken? When she explained why I couldn’t believe what I was hearing; she was returning her single-serve brewer because she hated the coffee it made. If you had seen me at that moment, you would have seen my jaw visibly on the floor. I’m pretty sure I gasped.
Naturally, I prodded my friend for more details. She told me that her entire Keurig® experience had been nothing more than frustrating. Samantha went on to explain that she had purchased several different k-cup brands and that she hadn’t liked any of them.
The first pod purchase was watery, flavorless, and hardly resembled coffee, she said. Samantha thought it was just a fluke, so she snagged another brand to try; this time, a dark roast. She felt something bolder might do the trick, but what she found was a stale, burn-tasting cup of coffee waiting for her at the end of the brew. Frustrated, Samantha tried one more brand, thinking she needed to dig a little more to find her favorite. The final coffee was worse than the other two – bitter and boring. And to top it all off? Well, I couldn’t just let her do this. I’m not usually one to delve into why people make their personal decisions, but I couldn’t leave this alone. I mean, to say I love my Keurig® is probably an understatement, and I certainly didn’t want my dear friend making a decision she regrets. Soooooo…I intervened.
I told Samantha I could easily list five reasons my Keurig® was the best purchase I’ve ever made just off the top of my head. She laughed at me, but told me to go ahead; you better believe I did! Here’s what I told her.
1. My mornings have seriously never been easier.
Seriously, Keurig® saved my mornings. Instead of having to grind the coffee, add it to my drip coffee maker, and then wait five to ten minutes for it to brew, I’m enjoying coffee in under two minutes. Sure, you could save a couple of minutes if you just used stale pre-ground coffee (blech), but who wants to do that? And don’t even get me started on how long it takes to make a proper pot of French press coffee!
Look, mornings just aren’t my thing. Between chasing my toddler around and trying to coax my four-year-old to eat a bit of – well, anything – I hardly have time to breathe, let alone brew a cup of coffee. With Keurig® I don’t have to take any extra time;
2. Finally, a decent cup of coffee before I start my day.
I totally hear you on the coffee being terrible; in fact, I experienced a very similar problem with both my drip coffee maker and with my Keurig® for a long time. Flavorless, burnt, and stale coffee would ruin my morning just about every time. But then something changed; a friend turned me on to a company called Angelino’s Coffee. There’s no one alive that can tell me cleaning and maintaining a drip brewer, or any other coffee brewing type is easier than with a Keurig®. With drip brewers, for instance, you have to throw away the used filter, clean up any spilled coffee grounds from the basket, and then wash the coffee pot itself after every single use. This is totally not the case with my Keurig® brewer.
Following every brew with Keurig®, I simply remove the pod and discard it – that’s it! You can even recycle the plastic portion of the coffee pod! Every few months, I simply run a descaling solution through my single-serve brewer and swap out the filter to keep my coffee tasting amazing.
5. Having fresh coffee delivered is so simple.
It’s just simply not feasible to run to the store all the time to buy fresh coffee beans. And honestly, who’s to say how long the grocery store has had their beans sitting on the shelf? I also don’t trust buying fresh coffee beans online and having them shipped to me; by the time the coffee reaches me, it could be weeks since the date it was actually roasted. No, thank you!
